MEET TOM

36 years of Professional and Life Experience

After 36 years in the legal profession, I’d like to give back and serve the people of Macoupin County as their Circuit Judge.  Macoupin County has always been my home. It’s where I grew up, and where I went to school. After graduating with honors from Carlinville High School and Millikin University, I decided to obtain my law degree from St. Louis University. I graduated and passed the Bar Exam in 1988, and was sworn in as an attorney.

One of my first jobs after law school was working in Madison County protecting the rights of injured workers. I also worked there as an assistant prosecutor for then State’s Attorney Bill Haine. Early on I was also fortunate to work as a prosecutor for Macoupin County under Ed Rees, and Jersey County for Lee Plummer. I have also spent a few years working as an assistant public defender. These jobs gave me

extensive experience in the courtroom, and a great start for future trial work. However, what I really wanted to do was come back home to Macoupin County and go into private

practice. I got that chance in 1990 when I joined the law firm of Denby, Meno, Bloomer and Denby. We had offices in Carlinville, Staunton, and Benld.

As a private attorney I have handled almost every type of

case. Everything from criminal law and DUI’s, to family law, estate planning and probate, to contracts and real estate. Over the last 20 years or so I have also worked on hundreds of cases as a mediator. Basically we tried to help just about everyone and everything that walked through our doors.

I learned a great deal from all of my partners, but I’m sure that I learned the most from working with my father, Bill Denby. He was the most honest and level headed person that I have known. He taught me to treat people fairly, and with respect, and to truly listen to their concerns. He also taught me that the practice of law is about helping people, and not just about trying to make money.

I have been fortunate to be married to my Wife, Maylene, for the last 34 years. We have lived and worked, and made our home here in Macoupin County for all of those years. This is where we chose to raise our family. The Good Lord blessed us with two children, and 3 grandchildren.

In addition to my legal practice, I am currently serving on the board of directors for Carlinville Area Hospital and Clinics. I have also served on the boards for the Macoupin County Community Foundation, the Carlinville Area Hospital Foundation, the Recycling Center, the Carlinville Country Club, and have been a long-time member of my Church Vestry.

When I have free time, I love to spend it outdoors. My Wife and I enjoy hiking, exercise, and chasing the grandkids. I have also always enjoyed playing and coaching sports. I devoted several years of my time as a coach for youth sports. Everything from baseball, to soccer, to basketball. It was such a rewarding experience for me.

In short, I believe that I have the experience, both in the legal profession and in life, to succeed as the next Resident Circuit Judge for this fine County. I have maintained my practice based upon honesty and integrity, and hope to take those qualities with me to the Courthouse. I would be honored and grateful to serve as your Resident Circuit Judge. Thank you All for your support, and I would appreciate your

vote in the Republican Primary on March 19 th !
